This thread is just for fun and to give all the newbie and indy developers out there a bit of encouragement. Let's take a look at some of the worst games and game designs of all time! ;D
Here is my nominee:
Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing
The actual product description:
From the desert to the plains, you'll be hauling loads and trying to stay one step ahead of the law, as you climb into your big rig for non-stop driving action. Race across America and deliver your load to its destination before the competition. so keep the tank full and your pedal to the metal as you rackup points and own the road.
The actual game:
The original version of the game released had absolutely NO audio; not even the terribly tuned lawnmower/blender sound effect for the engine. The game's box said that the objective was to deliver illegal cargo and run from the cops, but there aren't actually any cops in the game. In the original version AI opponents did appear at the starting line to race against... except they never actually moved and had no AI lol... They released a patch for the game sometime later to address this criticism and they simply scripted the AI trucks to follow the path of the road; but they would always stop short of the finish line so you couldn't lose lol. There's absolutely no collision detection in the game...all objects are passable, and the truck is just scripted to follow the shape of the terrain; thus you fall through bridges and can drive through any 3D object in the game. There are no physics... you can go up and down 90 degree slopes with zero change in speed. Trucks can accelerate infinitely in reverse and immediately stop when you let off the reverse button. I don't know how this is even called a "game"... I've seen better work from kids following a game programming tutorial. ;D
But how can this be of any encouragement to newbie and indy developers? Well... here's the real kicker: This game sold over 20,000 copies! Yes, it did! The moral of this story is not to write crap/fake games like this and rip off your customers (that could get you in trouble)... it is that you can do WAY better than this and your game CAN sell. You don't have to have a competitor to CoD or WoW just to sell copies; even "Big Rigs" sold 20,000+ copies or more lol.
So you can do it. Don't be discouraged by the huge competition of next-gen games from major studios like EA or Blizzard. Take it one step at a time, write good/unique games and get them on the shelf! But for God's sake, don't write a new Big Rigs!
What are your nominees for the worst game(s) of all time?
